Our Top 5 Essential Haircuts for Spring/Summer 2019

Despite the recent gale-force winds, Spring/Summer 2019 is fast approaching. With that comes a change in (hopefully) weather, fashion, trends, and that all important, ever – changing, permanent accessory, your hair. Not sure what to go for? Don’t panic, we’ve got you covered, Betty from our Liberty shop is here with 5 key looks we’ve predicted will be big for S/S this year!

The In-Between

Ever tried growing your hair but been caught in the dreaded in between phase? Well fear not gentlemen, modern gent Matthew McConaughey is leading the way. This mid length, shaggy chic style is a definite contender for the hottest hair look this S/S. Ask for a swept back, shattered shape, something that encourages the natural wave. Don’t panic if your hair lacks in the natural wave department, simply style with a curl enhancer or sea salt spray and let your locks flow. For that just out of pool look, simply tuck a strand behind the ear!

The Classic Cut

Worn by Rami Malek at the Oscars and Richard Madden at the Golden Globes, this ‘few weeks grown out’ classic cut is far from boring, and is a sure trend for S/S 2019. With a soft perimeter but structured shape, it’s a perfect, effortless companion to your tailored suit. Alternatively, scrap the side part and rock that gym chic look. Versatility is this cut’s strong point. Ask your barber for a short(ish) scissor cut, with a natural nape and versatile parting. Style with a dry texture spray and ditch the pomade for this one!

The Textured (Footballer’s) Fade

It doesn’t matter how many trendy, luscious-lock-owning celebs, influencers and damn right cool gents sport the longer styles, David Beckham proves the textured fade isn’t going anywhere for 2019. Maybe he’s been influenced by old school barbering since launching his House 99 range, or maybe he just can’t let go of that classic footballer look. Whatever it is, it works, and it’s hot. Ask for a mid-high fade, with a strong side parting, and a little length left on top; you’re going to need at least a bit of hair to put that matt wax in after all!

The Effortless One Length

The clue is in the name, introducing the beautifully simplistic one length cut. In contrast to fellow footballer David Beckham, Hector Ballerin shows us that it’s not all about being a macho-fade wearing man this S/S. Its androgynous and its amazing. If you’re lucky enough to have the length, simply ask for a trim, keeping strength through ends (wispy won’t cut it for this one) if not, stock up on your vitamins and maybe rock our in-between look in the mean time! All that hair is going to need more TLC than your standard short back and sides – invest in a nourishing hair mask and embrace that luxurious long hair.

The Barely a Buzz Cut

Buzz cuts rose to popularity in the late 19th century, with the advent of manual hair clippers. Now, don’t think this gives you an excuse to skip the barbers and start buzzing away at your own head, this Spring/Summer buzz cut requires skill. We saw music legend Alex Turner pave the way for buzz cuts last year, but this is 2019 people, things have changed. Now being worn in a more structured, sophisticated and stylish way, as proven by Creed II star, Michael B Jordan. Ask your barber for an all-over clipper cut, with a high and tight fade through the sides. Fear not if your hairline (or lack of) isn’t where it once was, the buzz cut is also the perfect option for thinning hair, reducing the contrast between your forehead and your hairline – proven all too well by Fashion Director Marc Goehring

So, if in true British style the sun fails to make an appearance this Spring and Summer season, brighten up your day with a trip to the barber shop. It’s a myth that barbers don’t like when you show us photos – it can help us! Go prepared with one of these five looks and rock the best Barnet in the pub garden. You’ll thank us later!

Is this guy a living audition for James Bond or what?

This suave Pompadour has all the makings of an old school MI6 agent, paired with a well cut tux Richard is the epitome of a dapper man on Sundays annual film awards roll out.

We usually see the pomp with a sharp fade around the back and sides but this softer scissor version yells elegance. And the naturally greying streak through the quiff shows a man who is comfortable with who he is.

Ask For: a soft pomp all scissors. A great barber will always rise to the challenge of giving you the extra care and attention it takes to get a great scissor finish.

To Style: use some of the SachaJuan volume cream (can be bought from all of our Ruffians shops) rubbed throughout the hair before blow drying. Carefully part the hair cleanly on your chosen side, dry the crown and sides flat and sleek then concentrate of getting the lift at the front.

Finish with either styling paste for fine to mid thickness hair, and go with pomade for a sleeker look on very thick hair.

Pro Hack: only dry your hair 85%, focussing on the areas that need most control, namely the sides and quiffed area. Leaving the hair slightly damp before applying finishing product means that as the hair settles into fully dry it will dry sculpted into place and hold for the duration.

Mahershala Ali at the Golden Globes

Best supporting actor nominee could support the male grooming industry single handedly with this super sharp fade. He is definitely committed to looking good as this style needs dedication keeping it en pointe.

Ask For: a high and tight fade with some texture on top.

To Style: if your hair is any kinds of curly then squeeze dry with towel, never rough dry. Then apply your product of choice and allow to settle into it self. Once dry fluff it up a little with your hands for some flexibility .

Pro Hack: if you haven’t got time to have a full fade as often as you’d like, pop in for a 15 min line up around the edges.

Shawn Mendes at the Grammys

So, musicians do tend to be a little more relaxed than the actors on the red carpet, and Shawn’s natural approach is definitely as fresh as his smile.

Increasingly, we are seeing guys making the most of their natural movement and keeping the style looking effortless.

Ask For: a classically scissor graduated haircut with the length left on top.

To Style: after washing allow to sit and rest for a while naturally drying before you do anything. Then apply some salt spray and diffuse dry without touching the hair too much. Once dry, dishevel with hands and leave it alone.

Pro Hack: try and avoid washing your hair very frequently. However a condition and rinse on the non washing days will give your hair more sheen and bounce.

Ricky Martin at the Golden Globes

Being a father certainly suits Ricky.

His looked has evolved so much in recent years and the sharp hair sharp beard combo is a great look on him.

Ask For: clipper fade, the choice with this one is as always based on your personal preference. So you can go right down to skin if thats your thing. Beards should be well maintained and a good rule of thumb is have a quick beard tidy in between haircut visits.

To Style: being a shorter hairstyle it will mostly look after itself and won’t need much doing. For texture and hold mix Ruffians styling paste with L’Oreal super dust and apply to dry hair pushing it into shape

Pro Hack: rub a drop or two of tea tree oil into the skin under the beard, this will soothe the skin and the action of massaging into that area helps to remove dead skin cells and prevent beard-druff

Henry Golding at the SAG awards

hair-tips-valentines- day

I don’t know if he’s crazy but he sure looks rich in this golden tux and well coiffed hair. It’s been quite the journey for him moving from TV presenter to Hollywood actor. But with being a recently new arrival on the scene is sure standing out.

Ask For: a classic graduated haircut with a cheeky nape taper. This can also be updated with a blowout around the sideburns lending a sharper look to the overall results .

To Style: you can’t beat some SachaJuan Ocean Mist styling spray for the volume required here. Apply to roots only and then dry hair away form your head using fingers and dryer, finger styling gives a more relaxed look than using a brush. Finish by applying SachaJuan Fibre paste in a very small quantity mainly through the lengths and ends.

Pro Hack: to revive tired looking hair without going to the bother of completely washing and styling, spray some hair spray onto the palms of your hands and run them through your hair concentrating on the roots, this will give you some lift and life to a tired barnet.
