Ruffians’ essential guide to keeping your hair cool in summer

Summer’s here and you may have noticed that it’s been a bit of a scorcher. How long it continues for remains to be seen, but it’s also the season for those well deserved summer holidays overseas and (hopefully) some near-guaranteed sunshine, swimming and err… sangria? But all the heat, humidity and chlorine takes its toll and the majority of men’s hairstyles will need a bit more TLC than a quick wash and go in the summer months. So, If you’re keen to keep your hair looking cool through in the heat keep these top tips from our barbers in mind.

Get it cut

If you want a quick and easy way to look after your hair then you should book an appointment with Ruffians. Having less hair obviously means you’ll feel cooler, just like wearing fewer clothes will make your body feel cooler.

That said, as tempting as it might be to shave it all off, even a little hair on your head will help keep the sun off your scalp and stop sweat running into your eyes.

Don’t overload your hair with product

The hotter the weather, the more you sweat. The moisture will affect the product you put into your hair, particularly if it is water based, and can cause it to clump at the ends and lose shape. Can’t bear the idea of not styling your hair all summer? Those with short hair should opt for something dry and thick. A clay-type product like Ruffians rough clay paste can be used for a matte effect and won’t go sticky or melt in the sun.

Avoid the burn

If you are getting a buzzcut or you have fine blond hair, remember that your hair only forms a partial barrier between the sun and your scalp. Make sure you use a high SPF on your scalp (particularly if you are new to short hair).

Look after your beard

Too much heat and moisture means there’s a risk of drying out your facial hair. If you have a longer beard, remember to shampoo and condition the tips every few days, and apply a beard oil daily to keep it hydrated. If you find it is getting crusty and straggly, maybe it’s time to trim it down to a suitably shorter length.

Beware the fringe

Though fringes have increased in popularity recently, be aware that longer styles may not be ideal for the weather. The hair will carry excess moisture and transfer it to your forehead, potentially resulting in spotty, greasy skin. If this does happen, make sure you exfoliate when washing, and then moisturise – and push your hair back, so you can get some oxygen onto the forehead.

Wash (and condition) it regularly

Being outdoors more generally in the heat means you’re going to sweat more so it might be worth thinking about increasing the amount you’re washing to once a day if you don’t already.

If you’re swimming in a chlorinated pool, think about getting a detox shampoo – particularly if you have longer hair – as chlorine can really damage your hair and leave it looking like straw.

Finally, always make sure you use a good conditioner or masque after washing your hair. Give it time to work it’s magic in the shower to keep moisture locked in and stop your hair from drying out.
