Benefits of argan oil

Argan Beard Oil – what is it, what are the benefits and how do you use it?

Whether you hold the record for the longest hipster beard in east London or are trying your hand at growing yours out, most grooming professionals recommend you use beard oil to keep those wiry chin whiskers in check. Argan is amongst the favourite beard oil options out there but what exactly is it and why should you use it?

What is argan oil?

Argan oil is extracted from the kernels of the argan tree native to northern Africa. In Morocco, argan oil has a multitude culinary of uses – from being used to dip bread for breakfast to dressing salads. For a long time, argan oil was also used by Moroccan Berber women for a range of skin and hair care purposes. However, over the last few years the secret of its many beneficial properties is out and it’s now an essential ingredient in the grooming routines of in-the-know men and women all over the world.

What are the benefits of argan oil for beards?

Where do we start? Argan oil is an excellent natural moisturiser and is often a key ingredient in products for treating acne, flakey skin and dry hair. But what are the benefits of using it on your beard?

Beard Oil nourishes your beard, making it softer and more manageable. It not only hydrates the hair, but the skin underneath it as well. When you grow a beard, the hair absorbs a lot of the natural moisture produced by your skin, and because of this, skin can start to dry out.

As we move into the winter months, going from the lovely centrally heated indoors to the cold outside is never anyone’s idea of fun and constant changes in temperature can leave your skin and hair dry and brittle, so, beard oil is the perfect way to combat this and have you feeling moisturised and hydrated in no time!

Dry and broken skin leads to beard itch and its partner in crime, beard dandruff. The dandruff is caused by excessive scratching at the dry, dead skin beneath the hair. By using beard oil, the skin beneath will be kept moisturised and stop both the itch and dandruff. Killing two birds with one stone, so to speak.

Beard hair doesn’t all grow at the same length or even in the same direction. Whether you choose to style your beard to the shape of your face or let it grow out as it pleases, argan beard oil will soften the hair, saving your beard from being dry and difficult, instead making it more supple and manageable for whatever style you choose.

Most decent beard oils are scented with essential oils, meaning your beard will smell fresh and clean all day. Harsh aftershaves can be somewhat over powering but beard oils are gently scented with a more natural fragrance. Ruffians’ own Argan Beard Oil contains a mixture of essential oils, which stimulate, moisturise and promote healthy hair growth with a zingy citrus scent. Delicious!

As beard oil nourishes your beard hair, it’ll help prevent split ends and make your hair follicles stronger. If you experience patchy beard growth, argan beard oil will promote healthy skin and can help the hair follicles to flourish and also prevents ingrown hairs.

If you suffer from sensitive skin, argan oil’s properties as a natural decongestant help to cleanse pores and airways. it can help prevent the redness and irritation that comes with harsh chemicals from shampoos or day to day environmental changes. Argan oil doesn’t interfere with sebum production and doesn’t clog pores, so it can help cleanse and nourish skin prone to breakouts underneath the beard hair. So, all in all, a win-win situation we think!

If a softer beard and clearer skin aren’t enough of a reason to use argan beard oil, it also has anti-aging properties that combat free radicals and help to keep you looking young, fresh and smelling great too! What more could you want?

How to use our Ruffians Argan Beard Oil

So now we know what beard oil actually does, we spoke to one of our barbers, Callum, from our Shoreditch shop for some top tips on how you should be using beard oil.

Before anything, you need to make sure your face is clean and free from clogged pores and dead skin. In order to do this, Cal recommends using a good quality facial scrub. Wet your face and with a small amount gently exfoliate the skin using circular motions to really get that face clean and ready.

Cal’s next top tip is to use either a hot towel, steam or hot water to open up the pores on your face and to soften the beard hair. This will make it easier to work with and more effective in absorbing the beard oil later.

Cal says that in order to maintain a good, solid beard shape, it is important to use a brush to smooth out those unruly hairs. Combs are not as effective as they’re sometimes not as gentle on the hair and skin underneath.

Cal’s number one top tip for using our beard oil is to make sure you’re not using too much. He says that is the most common mistake he sees with beard oil as it can make you look overly greasy and shiny, something we’d like to try and avoid! He recommends for tailored beards, one drop. And for those with big beards, three drops. Simply apply the drops to your (clean) hands, then evenly distribute and run through your beard from the roots.
