Last week we announced the exciting news that Ruffians is heading across the Atlantic for the first time and setting up a pop-up barber shop, kindly hosted by menswear gurus O.N.S. Clothing at their store in the heart of SoHo in downtown Manhattan.
So who are the Ruffians representing us out in the Big Apple? First up, is Denis Robinson Ruffians Creative Director since 2017. Here’s Denis:
It’s Denis’ job to drive Ruffians’ reputation for creativity and talent to new heights in the men’s hair industry – both at home and internationally. So it makes sense that he’s part of the team introducing the Ruffians experience to discerning New Yorkers.
Denis brings 35 years of industry experience: he trained in Ireland and honed his craft alongside the former British Hairdresser of the Year Charles Worthington MBE. An educator of the Senior Team at Charles Worthington, he then headed up their Artistic Division, before moving over to the London Hair Academy; there, he educated and guided dozens of students towards industry success.
Having spotted a step-change in the creative potential of the men’s hair industry, Denis joined the Ruffians team in 2016 and was made Creative Director a year later. Thanks to his vision and experience, Ruffians goes from strength to strength as an artistic and commercial trendsetter in the industry.
As well as running the pop-up, Denis is putting that vision and creativity to more than just cutting hair in NYC – he’s also leading an exciting editorial photoshoot on some of lower Manhattan’s most iconic streets. Watch this space for more on that in the coming weeks!
Joining Denis is Ruffians legend Tommy Cunliffe, whose journey here is genuinely inspirational.
He joined Ruffians in August 2014, working as a trainee in what was then Ruffians’ only London shop; Covent Garden. In 2015, with less than two years experience cutting hair professionally under his belt, Tommy was named one of the most exciting up-and-coming hairdressers in the UK, winning The Rising Star award in prestigious hair industry competition, Creative Head’s It List, which celebrates the brightest young stars aged 30 and under.
Tommy became the manager of Ruffans’ Shoreditch shop when it opened in 2016 and has helped make it the huge success it has become, inspiring and developing his team and helping make the shop the hugely welcoming, friendly and laidback space that his customers love.
As well as being a great manager and an award-winning, creative barber, Tommy is the life and soul of any party and lots of fun: the perfect mix to help give New Yorkers an introduction to an authentic Ruffians experience!
